PROMOTION FOR EX-HOKIE MIKE WILLIAMS

The Philadelphia Phillies released reliever Mark Davis and called up former Virginia Tech pitcher Mike Williams on Friday to bolster their middle-relief corps.

Williams, a 23-year-old right-hander, was 9-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 14 games at Scranton- Wilkes-Barre of the Class AAA International League. This will be Williams' second stint this season with the Phillies. He was recalled May 14 and optioned back to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre on May 23, after appearing in one game and giving up four runs in three innings.

Davis, who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on April 13 for pitcher Brad Hassinger, appeared in 25 games, going 1-2 with no saves and a 5.17 ERA.

Davis won the NL Cy Young Award in 1989, when he saved 44 games for the San Diego Padres.

Davis said, "Things weren't going the way they [the Phillies] wanted, I don't know what I'm going to do now. . . . I've been through a lot the last few years. Nothing comes as a shock to me anymore. They just said I wasn't pitching the way they thought I could and that they needed to make some moves."

\ ROYAL TREATMENT: Royals Stadium officially was renamed Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium on Friday night in honor of the team founder and owner, who was too ill to attend the ceremony.

Kauffman, 76, who has bone cancer, had resisted a movement to rename the stadium in his honor. At the urging of his wife, he relented in June. Club officials hoped he would be able to attend the ceremony. But at the last minute, a spokesman said, he decided to stay home.

"Mr. Kauffman is very disappointed that he's not here to be with you today," said Muriel Kauffman, who talked her husband into buying the American League expansion team in 1968. "He is really thrilled that you did this honor by naming this stadium Kauffman Stadium."
