OBIT-KEITH, WILLIAM ALLEN
KEITH, William Allen, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, July 5, 1993. He
is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Ruth Shelburne Keith; his daughter
and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Vinson; three grandchildren, Aaron, Rachel, and
Elizabeth Vinson, all of Roanoke; two brothers, James Keith of Newport News,
and Jack Keith, Pennington Gap; one sister, Greta Benton, Big Stone Gap;
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Walter Keith; two sisters, Beatrice Tiller and Betty Cridlin. He was born
and grew up in Lee County, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during World
War II and the Korean War. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from
Lincoln Memorial University, a Master of Arts degree from Peabody College of
Vanderbilt University, and pursued post-graduate studies at the College of
William and Mary. His career was devoted to education. He served as a
principal in Blackwater, Va.; as an assistant principal, principal, and
purchasing agent for the Hampton City Schools; and as superintendent of
Mathews County Schools. He retired in 1979, and moved to Roanoke in 1980, to
enjoy his grandchildren. Throughout his adult life, he was active in the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was most recently a member of
Bethany Christian Church, Roanoke. He loved people and relished life. Funeral
services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel. A
graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Lee Memorial Gardens, Lee
County, Va. The family will receive friends from Oakey's North Chapel, 2 to 4
p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from Sturgill Funeral Home, Pennington Gap,
Va. from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
