OBIT-WHITAKER, FRED CHARLES SR.

WHITAKER, Fred Charles Sr., 71, of Roanoke, died at his home early Friday morning, July 2, 1993. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was the retired Executive Vice president of Fred Whitaker Co., a textile company founded by his grandfather in Philadelphia, Pa. He was on the Board of Directors of the YMCA, a member of Cave Spring Masonic Lodge #230, the Scottish Rite Kazim Temple, and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club. Mr. Whitaker was past president and treasurer of Kazim Temple First Aid Unit, a member of Hidden Valley Country Club, and a member of the Chestnut Creek Golf Club in Hardy, Va. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Whitaker Jr. Surviving are his wife, Janet C. Whitaker; three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred C. Whitaker Jr. and Pamela, Scott Whitaker and Jean, Richard A. Whitaker and Ruth; six grandchildren, Chad, Christian, Meggan, Brian, Susan, and Allison Whitaker; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church (corner of S. Jefferson and McClannahan), at 11 a.m. Tuesday, by the Rev. Jess Bratton. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park with Masonic Rites conducted by Cave Spring Masonic Lodge #230. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Shrine Crippled Childrens Hospital, Greenville Unit, c/o Kazim Temple, 628 W. Campbell Ave., S.W., Roanoke, VA 24016, Good Samaritian Hospice, 4235 Colonial Ave., Roanoke, VA 24018, or First Presbyterian Church Special Needs Fund, P.O. Box 8538, Roanoke, VA 24014. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, Monday, July 5, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
