BUCS TRIP RED SOX

Mariano De los Santos recorded his club-high ninth victory as the Salem Buccaneers edged the Lynchburg Red Sox 2-1 on Tuesday night in Carolina League baseball.

Salem's second victory in as many days pulled the Bucs into a three-way tie with Winston-Salem and Kinston for the second-half lead in the Southern Division. All three are 9-7.

De los Santos (9-5) blanked the Red Sox on four hits through six innings. Dennis Konuszewski, Jason Christiansen and Jeff McCurry finished, with McCurry picking up his 20th save.

The Bucs broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning when Ramon Espinosa singled, took third on Ken Bonifay's single and scored on catcher Walt McKeel's wild pickoff attempt.

Salem made it 2-0 in the eighth when Chance Sanford singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a groundout and scored when reliever Jeff Faino misplayed on Espinosa's bunt. \
