DOCTORS GIVE BABY NEW HEART AND BONE MARROW

Doctors completed what they said were the world's first double heart and bone marrow transplants Wednesday on a 6-month-old boy who suffers from a rare disorder.

The baby, Hal Brodhurst from south London, suffers from Pompe's Disease, an inherited chemical defect that leads to heart and muscle weakness. If left untreated it can kill by the age of 2.

Surgeons at Harefield Hospital in suburban London performed the bone marrow transplant Wednesday after conducting a separate heart transplant 11 days ago.

Doctors hope the fresh cells in the bone marrow will make the chemical the baby lacks, but said they probably won't know whether the operations were successful for six months.

"Hal remains critical. He's been critical for months," said Dr. Ray Powles, one of the doctors who performed the marrow transplant.
