BUCS CAN'T HOLD ON

After the Salem Buccaneers had blown most of an eight-run lead Wednesday against Lynchburg, they turned to the league's top reliever, Jeff McCurry, to bail them out.

He couldn't hold on, either.

Lynchburg's Bill Selby hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Red Sox a 10-9 Carolina League victory before a crowd of 554 at City Stadium.

Lynchburg scored six times in the sixth inning to make it 9-7. An RBI double by Selby (thrown out trying for third), a walk to John Eierman and a single by Randy Brown drove off starter Esteban Loaiza. Kevin Rychel entered the game and gave up George Scott III's two-run double that made it 9-4. Ron Mahay's single made it 9-5, and Jose Malave drove home two with a double.

Eierman's home run in the seventh off Sean Evans cut Lynchburg's deficit to a run.

In the ninth, McCurry lost a chance for his 21st save when Selby followed Felix Colon's single with a drive to right-center field.
