`MOTOR VOTER' LAW WORTH CELEBRATING

The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County rejoices with league members all over the United States that our efforts over many years finally bore fruit in the passage of the National Voter Registration Act, (the "Motor Voter" bill).

This means that nearly 70 million Americans who were not registered to vote can now register in federal elections through:

Motor voter registration, simultaneously with their application for a driver's license, nondriver identification card, renewal or change of address.

Mail registration.

Agency registration - in person at offices of selected government agencies.

President Clinton, signing the bill into law, cited the League of Women Voters as a "fighter for freedom." For 73 years, this national organization with its thousands of hard-working volunteers has been dedicated to "widening the circle of what democracy means."

For the past 21 years, the Montgomery County league has worked to improve our local community by educating and empowering its citizens. Anyone who wishes to be part of this ongoing task is welcome.\ Nadine J. Newcomb\ President,\ League of Women Voters
