Edward Peoples, also known as Trenton John Franklin, 26, was wounded shortly after noon, said D.C. Corrections Department spokesman Walter Hill.
Peoples, who lived in Washington and who was sentenced to Lorton in 1986 on robbery and drug-related charges, was taken to DeWitt Army Hospital at Fort Belvoir where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m.
He had been scheduled for release in 1996.
Five inmates were being questioned about the attack and three homemade weapons were recovered, Hill said.
