JOYCE WITT, FEDERAL COURT CLERK, TO RETIRE

Joyce Witt, who has been clerk of the U.S. District Court in Roanoke for more than 20 years, will retire in December.

Morgan E. Scott, who has been first assistant U.S. attorney, was named to replace her.

Witt began her career with the court as a deputy clerk in 1961 and was named clerk in 1972.

She is the senior clerk in the U.S. 4th Judicial Circuit and ranks fifth in length of service for all clerks nationwide.

She was the first woman president of the Federal Court Clerks Association.

Scott, who was named by Judge Jackson Kiser, has been with the U.S. Attorney's Office for 17 years. Before that, he was an assistant commonwealth's attorney in Newport News.

He was presented an award this month from U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno for superior performance by an assistant U.S. attorney.
