PIER 1 IS ON ITS WAY

Pier 1 Imports has bought land at Valley View Mall and plans to build a store there next year.

The 9,000-square-foot building will be between the Brendle's store and Applebee's Restaurant on the right side of the Roanoke mall's entrance road off Hershberger Road.

The store is scheduled as part of the company's 1994 expansion, said a spokeswoman in the chain's Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters.

She said the company doesn't have a timetable for construction and opening. Its current fiscal year won't end until March.

Faison Associates, which operates the mall, confirmed the purchase. Pier Group bought the land from Hersch Associates, a limited partnership of which Henry J. Faison is a partner.

Pier 1, which recently opened a store at River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg, is a publicly traded company with 605 stores in the United States and Canada. It imports more than 80 percent of its merchandise.

The stores, which sell home furnishings, decorative items and fashions, aim for a 50 percent change of merchandise each year.

A company fact sheet said Pier 1 plans to have 900 stores in the United States and Canada by 2000.

The Brendle's store, Pier 1's near neighbor, went out of business recently and sold its merchandise to a liquidation company that is operating in the space.

A leasing agent for Faison Associates in Charlotte would not comment on any prospects for a new tenant for the Brendle's spot.
