WOMEN'S TENNIS COACH ON PROBATION FOR '93-94

Virginia Tech's women's tennis coach Anne Jones will work the 1993-94 year on "probation," Jones said this week, meaning next year will be her last if she does not meet athletic director Dave Braine's expectations.

Jones, who will enter her 10th year at Tech this fall, said her annual "letter of appointment" was not renewed, and said Braine wants improvement in three areas: recruiting, dedication to coaching, and team discipline.

Braine would not talk about why Jones is on probation.

"That's a private, personnel decision," he said Friday. "It's a matter of just getting things done we think we need to get done. It's not the first time [a coach has gone on probation] and I'm sure it won't be the last."

Braine said women's basketball coach Carol Alfano was on probation last season, but the Hokies finished 20-8, the most wins in the program's history, and finished second in the Metro Conference.

Jones said she doesn't know the specifics of Braine's three target areas and wants to meet with him to find out. She did miss two weekends of the 1992 season to compete in the Gatorade Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii, but she did that with Tech's permission.

"I'd like to stay," Jones said. "I was really surprised.

"I think you can always improve. I don't think our program is in that bad shape."

The women's tennis team was 13-9 last year and finished fourth in the seven-team Metro.

Tech was 4-1 in the fall season, but lost No. 4 singles player Kristen Habinak and No. 6 Kathy Warnicke to knee injuries. No. 5 Kelly Vinton transferred to Kentucky.
