ROANOKER TO LEAD VA. CANCER SOCIETY

Dr. Gerald Schertz of Roanoke is the new president of the Virginia division of the American Cancer Society.

Schertz, an oncologist in private practice with Oncology & Hematology Associates of Southwest Virginia, was elected in June at the organization's annual meeting in Williamsburg. He has been a Cancer Society volunteer for 15 years.

Schertz is also an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Virginia and medical director for Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Hospice Program.

Other Roanoke area volunteers recognized at the meeting: Dr. Robert Berry, elected an honorary life member; Dr. Robert Heath, elected as a medical director and appointed service and rehabilitation committee chairman; and Briggs Andrews, elected to the executive committee and as an area field services director member.

Nancy Agee and Julie Watts were re-elected to the board of directors.
