ARIZ. COUPLE WINS RACE IN 1910 KNOX

An Arizona couple won the transcontinental Great American Race on Saturday, crossing the finish line in their 1910 Knox, the oldest of the 79 cars that completed the event.

Alan and Mary Travis of Phoenix netted $100,000 for finishing first in the annual race, which began two weeks ago at Huntington Beach, Calif., and wound through 16 states and ended at Norfolk's Town Point Park.

"It's been fun, but I'm burned out," said Candy Stephani, 37, of Glenriddle, Pa., owner of a red 1954 XJ-120 Jaguar.

Of the 92 cars that started the 4,250-mile race, sponsored by Interstate Batteries, 13 dropped out along the way.

Several thousand fans weathered the heat to welcome the finishers and check out their Packards, Ford Model A's and Mustangs. Local car enthusiasts also displayed their old vehicles along the street.

"I've never even heard of half these cars," said Bo Williams, 15, of Norfolk. "They're awesome. There's some pretty neat styling."

His father, Paul Williams, 48, found the show revived memories of the Mustang Mach I he had owned in his youth. "I bought that car for $2,000, put 100,000 miles on it and sold it for $2,000," he said. "Now I wish I'd never let it go."
