Landon, a Roanoke journalist for 38 years, joined the newspaper in 1964 as an associate editorial editor.
His career has included stints as editorial page editor, associate editor and managing editor. He has been executive editor for the past 11 years and was named vice president in 1984.
He started out in broadcasting, originally as a radio and television reporter for WDBJ. While he was news director, the stations won three Virginia public service awards and recognition for best radio commentary, interviews, state and local special events coverage, and comprehensive news coverage.
Landon received the 1988 George Mason Award for outstanding contribution to Virginia journalism and has served as a Pulitzer Prize juror on two occasions. He is a former president of the Virginia Associated Press and a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
Spencer Christian, weather forecaster for ABC's "Good Morning America," was honored by the VPA as the 1993 Virginian of the Year. Christian, 45, a native of Charles City, joined WWBT-TV in Richmond in 1971. He worked as a reporter for four years before becoming the station's weatherman. In 1986, Christian moved on to "Good Morning America."
