OBIT-MATTOX, ROBERT POWELL SR.

MATTOX, Robert Powell Sr., 85, of Route 2, Moneta, died Saturday, July 10, 1993, in a local nursing home. He was born in Campbell County July 23, 1907, a son of the late William Davis Mattox and Betty Snow English Mattox. He was a member and Deacon of Flint Hill Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter and employee of American Viscose. He was a member and past Chancelor Commander of Pythian Lodge #162, and a member of Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mable Bowden and by his wife of 66 years, Annie Catherine Nester Mattox on May 30, 1993. He is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Ann M. and Charles Latimer, Bedford, Catherine M. and Bill Pierce of Ruckersville, Barbara M. and Clarence Catron of Bedford, Mary M. and Bill Blankenship of Vinton, and Joyce M. and Joe Marr of Richmond; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert P. Jr. and Darlene Mattox of Huntington Beach, Calif., Henry D. and Jeanette Mattox of Jeffersonville, Ind., and James A. and Nancy Mattox of Christiansburg; three brothers, Marvin Mattox and Melvin Mattox, both of Moneta and Charles A. Mattox of Vinton; two sisters, Madeline M. Mitchell of Roanoke, and Betty M. Custer of Staunton; his son-in-law, Rodney Bowden; and a special friend, Arthur Gebhard; also 33 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 13, 1993, at Flint Hill Baptist Church, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Winters and the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, and other times at the family home in Moneta.
