ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The number of active telephone lines in the Roanoke Valley fell slightly in the past two months, a result of departing college students at the end of the school year.

Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. counted 132,583 lines in use during April. That number dropped to 132,210 in May and 131,938 in June as students disconnected dorm phones.

But the June figure represents a 3.2 percent increase over 127,859 access lines in June 1992.

The number of coal cars loaded by Norfolk Southern Corp. declined dramatically last week to 9,493,

That's off 33.4 percent from 14,260 the prior week and 30.5 percent from 13,661 for a comparable week last year. NS typically loads 20,000 cars a week.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Southern said the number of coal cars was affected by the United Mine Workers strike as well as the July 4 holiday.

Bankruptcies were also up to 33 last month from 24 in May and 26 a year ago.
