Martin, 26, will have the distinction of serving as head coach in three sports this year for the Group AA Bengals. He will continue as coach in boys' basketball and in track and field.
As football coach, Martin succeeds Mike Myers, who resigned last week to become an assistant principal at Northumberland High School in Heathsville.
"Bobby's interested in coaching both sports [football and basketball], but he's not interested in giving up either one. With the time factor of [finding a football coach] by the time you advertise and interview, you're running into [football] practice time," said Leon Gunter, Bassett's principal, explaining the unusual move of a Group AA school having one person as a head coach in three sports.
Gunter said the football position will be advertised in the spring and that Martin would be welcome to apply. At that time, he might have to make a choice between boys' basketball and football.
Martin was a standout football and basketball player at Laurel Park High School before going to Tech, where he was a three-year starter at linebacker. He took the Bassett boys' basketball job during the winter. He moved to Bassett two years ago after working one year with his brother, Melvin Martin, who was then the head football coach at Franklin County High School.
