The EPA published its order for the former Rentokil Inc. plant June 30, after almost nine years of tests and reports. The owner has 60 days to respond with a plan to implement the order, then negotiations begin to resolve how the cleanup will be done, said Patrick Gaughan, an EPA spokesman.
The EPA's proposal requires the owner to demolish structures at the site and dispose of hazardous waste in the soil and holding pond at the northern Henrico County site. The company began operating in 1956 and closed in 1991.
The order proposes two plans to remove the toxic chemicals. One alternative would cost about $10.1 million. The other would cost an estimated $19 million. - Associated Press
