Stonewall Jackson's board of directors agreed last month to affiliate with Carilion on a management contract basis.
The management agreement calls for Carilion to provide on-site management through a Carilion-employed administrator. The hospital also will have the opportunity to participate in managed care and other physician networks and gain access to specialized clinical and support services.
Carilion, which manages 12 hospitals and other health-related businesses in the region, was selected over two other hospital management companies, said Stewart Epley, chairman of the hospital board.
"It really boiled down to the very high opinion our doctors had of Carilion," said Epley. "Our doctors here refer a lot of patients to doctors that practice in Carilion." He said Carilion's regional orientation also played a key role in the selection process.
Epley said the two other contenders were Quorum Health Resources, headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., and the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Under the management contract, Stonewall Jackson's board retains authority in making policy decisions for the 48-bed hospital and its 50-bed extended-care facility. Four other hospitals of comparable size within the Carilion system operate under similar arrangements.
