CYCLIST RAISING MONEY FOR RACE

Christina Baum, one of 30 cyclists scheduled to race across America later this month, is raising money to finance her participation in the grueling bike race.

A fund has been set up through the General Electric Employees Credit Union in Roanoke. Anyone interested in making a donation may send a check made out to Race Across America to Baum at Route 3, Box 164, Floyd, Va. 24091.

Baum, a full-time graduate student at Virginia Tech in human nutrition, qualified for the race earlier this summer. The race will begin in Irvine, Calif., on July 28 and end in Savannah, Ga., on Aug. 7 and 8.

Cyclists will be on their bikes for eight to 10 days, sleeping as little as 1 1/2 hours each day.
