IN SERVICE

Army Cadet BART D. STEWART graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and has been commissioned a second lieutenant.

The son of Douglass A. and Hedda J. Stewart of Christiansburg, Bart Stewart received a bachelor of science degree and is scheduled for assignment to the Adjutant's General Corps.

Those retiring include:

Air Force Master Sgt. JEANIE L. KOMOLOFSKE, daughter of Mildred M. Sherman of Pembroke, has announced her retirement after 20 years of military service.

Those recently receiving promotions include:

\ BARRY M. SPRINGER of Christiansburg has been promoted to the rank of Specialist Four in the 29th Infantry Division Band of the Virginia Army National Guard in Roanoke.

Those reporting for duty recently include:

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class ANTHONY D. SNELL, son of Carlotta E. Lewis of Dublin, reported for duty at the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Guam.

Marine Pfc. STEVEN W. MELVIN, son of William M. and Linda T. Melvin of Pearisburg, recently reported for duty with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Lance Cpl. DAVID W. PERDUE and Navy Petty Officer 1st Class GENE D. SHANNON both participated in major military exercises recently.

Perdue, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin W. Perdue of Radford, took part in "Team Spirit 93." He is with 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan.

Perdue joined almost 100,000 military personnel from the United States and exercise host South Korea. The exercises have been held periodically since 1976 to improve South Korea's defense readiness.

Shannon, a 1977 graduate of Shawsville High School, took part in "Ocean Venture 93," while aboard the aircraft carrier USS America.

More than 20,000 service members trained with forces from the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. The exercise took place off the coast of Puerto Rico.

Those being honored include:

Air Force Airman 1st Class DELMAR W. WALKER, son of John H. and Evelyn C. Walker of Christiansburg, has been decorated with the Air Force Achievement Medal. The medal is awarded to airmen for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.

Those recently completing basic training include:

Air Force Airman BENJAMIN L. HALL, son of Gayle E. Hall Hall and stepson of Walter W. Hall of Riner, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Those recently completing special training include:

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class KIRSTEN J. THOMPSON, daughter of Evelyn G. Thompson of Christiansburg, graduated from the financial services specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.
