CHURCH WINS SCHOLARSHIP FROM USTA

Northside High School's Aaron Church will receive a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of The Olive Garden restaurant and the USTA Women's Circuit of Roanoke tennis committee at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Church was chosen for his combination of tennis skills and academic achievement. He was one of six area players whose names were submitted by their high schools at Hunting Hills' request. Social activities and community service also were considered.

Other nominees were Patrick Henry's Kristin Wilhelm, North Cross' Aaron Marley, Glenvar's Wes Jones, Cave Spring's Andrea Barnes and Salem's Eddel Veloso.

Donna Mills, a Hunting Hills tennis committee member, said the scholarship is an attempt by the tournament to "get the community involved and give something back. Hopefully, it will continue."

The scholarship is to be used at a college of the recipient's choice. Church will be presented with the grant between evening matches at the tournament on July 30.

Hunting Hills tennis pro John Barker, committee member Sandra Woodford, USTA tournament sponsor Hugh Sawyer and local tennis organizer Dave Flanagan chose the winner.

The $10,000 USTA tournament runs July 24 through Aug. 1 at Hunting Hills and features some college and lower-ranked professional players.

The Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center will be the site for matches beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
