OBIT COX, ELBERT
COX, Elbert, 87, of Richmond, died Wednesday, July 7, 1993. The funeral was
Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with burial in the Church Cemetery. A
native of Grayson County, Mr. Cox joined the National Park Service in 1931 and
retired in 1966 as Regional Director with responsibility for parks in 12
states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. From 1966 to 1971 he was Director
of the Virginia Commission on Outdoor Recreation with responsibility for the
development of outdoor park facilities in Virginia. In World War II he served
as a Lieutenant Commander in the U. S. Navy. Survivors include his wife,
Elizabeth Austin Cox; two sons, Elbert Thomas Cox of Poquoson and John Terry
Cox of Richmond; five brothers, Paul G. Cox of Lancaster, Penn., Joseph E. Cox
of Catawba, Thomas Randolph Cox of Raleigh, N.C., Robert Bruce Cox of Newport
News, Hardin Cox of Floyd; a sister, Annie Cox Ward of Salem.
