LEFT, RIGHT LABELS DON'T TELL WHOLE STORY

MODERN media conceptions of liberal and conservative are wholly dependent on which governmental powers are being expanded.

Today's "conservatives," who desire a militaristic police state with an inflexible moral code determined by a ruling elite, are neo-Cromwellian. Modern "liberals," however, envision a global government that will supersede our own, one that will somehow be more sensitive to the poorer nations' needs. Once established, the Third World would become more vulnerable to industrial exploitation. We would be held to a "mental health" standard (i.e., officialdom would attempt to "cure" dissenters of their opinions) rather than a Biblical standard.

The media have divided practically all political discourse between two camps that aim to increase governmental power at the individual's expense. There is a wide range of opinion on both the left and right that is being ignored and, given the record of the centrist establishment, this oversight is inexcusable. SCOTT BARBER ROANOKE
