NORTH IS A BRAVE AMERICAN HERO

REGARDING the July 1 letter to the editor by Gerald J. Flynn, entitled "Oliver North is patriot, statesman":

I agree with his letter of praise for Lt. Col. North and the contention that you prefer the likes of our president - who refused to serve in the military and was unknown until recently by most of the nation. I have read other articles in which you criticized North.

Have you served in the military? I served in World War II and also worked as a civilian for the United States Army for more than 23 years as a quality-inspection specialist at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Both times, I raised my right hand and swore to obey my commanders, both military and civilian.

North also swore to obey his commanders. He was following orders, as I had to do. Those who have worked under orders have done things we're not proud of, but we carried them out just the same.

North will run for U.S. senator in Virginia next year, and he will have my vote. He believes, as I as a Christian do, in moral values, in prayer in school, in the pledge of allegiance to our flag before sporting events. He believes that abortion is illegal and that gays should not serve in our armed forces. I will continue to think of him as a brave American hero.

My wife and I met North when he spoke at Cave Spring High School. If you have not met him, I urge you to do so before you write any more editorials about him. It is a slander to write articles about anyone who served his country and was willing to die for it, if necessary.

May God give Flynn the strength to stand up for what he believes in and to vote to give John Warner the help he needs so that our nation will turn back to Jesus Christ. ELMER E. PHILLIPS CHRISTIANSBURG
