The Barrett-Bonner Academic Award, honoring the conference school with the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, was named for Barrett and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, a former Furman faculty athletic representative.
"The Barrett-Bonner Award is a fine way to honor two men who served the conference and their institutions with distinction for a long period of time," said Dr. J.B. Stroud, Davidson's faculty athletic representative.

Virginia coaches Mark Bernardino and Bob Clemmer will guide competing swim teams during the U.S. Olympic Festival, July 24-26 in San Antonio.
Bernardino, head coach of the UVa men's and women's teams for 15 years, will direct the East squad. Clemmer, a four-year assistant with the Cavaliers, will coach the West.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for us, as coaches, to learn about some of the young talent that is out there," Bernardino said.". . . To have both of us coaching and being recognized by U.S. Swimming [the sport's governing body] is a special treat and a tribute to the UVa program."
Discus Athletic sportswear will sponsor ACC men's basketball for the next three seasons under an agreement between the conference and Tultex Corporation of Martinsville.
Discus Athletic will be the exclusive active sportswear for ACC men's basketball, and the agreement allows for three 30-second commercials to be shown during every regular-season and tournament game.
"We consider this the jewel in the crown of collegiate sporting events," said Ron Anderson, Tultex's director of marketing.
Discus Athletic will also be the exclusive supplier of uniforms and sportswear for the Clemson men's basketball team during the 1993-94 season.
Ryan Ketron, Timesland's golfer of the year last season as a junior at William Byrd High School, won two matches Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Bobby Bowers Junior Memorial tournament in Springfield.
Ketron beat Michael Liapis 2 and 1 in the first round and Chad Moseley 4 and 2 in the round of 16 to advance to a match today with Nathan Lash.
K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke won a second-round singles match in the boys' 14-and-under zonal championships at Westside Tennis Club in Forest Hills, N.Y. Hippensteel beat Jason Mayer of Pennsylvania 6-0, 6-1.
Hippensteel and Shawn Chiwla of Maryland teamed to beat Mayer and Shannon Price 6-2, 6-3 in mixed doubles. Hippensteel is 5-0 so far, having won one mixed doubles, two singles and two doubles matches.
Chip Sullivan, the pro at Hanging Rock, shot a 5-under-par 67 to share first place in the AMF-Signet Open pro-am at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.
Sullivan matched John Stanley of Newport News and Rick Schuler of Fairfax. The Open begins Thursday.
