The county Board of Supervisors appropriated $387,228 Tuesday to pay for the equipment. The money will be repaid in about four weeks through the Virginia Department of Education's computer technology project using federal Chapter I funds.
Seventy Macintosh computers will allow pupils to tap into the Virginia Public Education Network, giving them access to library materials in such places as Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and the Library of Congress, Superintendent James Vaught said.
There will also be 75 laptop computers that can be used in school and checked out by pupils and parents in homes where computers are not available.
A training session in their use is planned, and must be completed by those checking out the laptops. - Southwest bureau
