TEEN-AGERS PLAN WALK ACROSS STATE, THROUGH HISTORY

Summer school students at Roanoke's Alternative Education Center will leave Sunday on a six-day "Walk Through History" from Roanoke to the Tidewater area.

About 35 teen-agers and a dozen staffers from the center's "School Without Walls" will walk Sunday toward a campsite at Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, then hike toward Lynchburg Monday, spending the night at Liberty University.

Students will walk as far as they can each day, according to center staff, then ride vans to their destinations. The rest of the week, vans will take them to Appomattox, Richmond, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown and the Newport News shipyards. The group will return to Roanoke July 24.

The center, which serves students who are in danger of quitting school, is seeking contributions for supplies. Checks, payable to Roanoke City Public Schools, may be sent to the Alternative Education Center, P.O. Box 13145, Roanoke 24031.
