OBIT SHUMAN, PAULINE WEBB
SHUMAN, Pauline Webb, 69, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, July 13, 1993, at her
home. Born in Frankfort, Ky., she attended the University of Cincinnati, and
trained as a nurse at the Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1944 to
1947, she served overseas as an officer in the United States Army Nurse Corps.
She subsequently was graduated from Radford College in Radford. She served for
30 years as a nurse and nursing administrator with the Veterans
Administration, working at facilities in Salem and Hampton, Lake City, Fla.,
Sioux Falls, S.D., and White City, Ore. She closed her career as Chief of the
Nursing Service at the Northhampton, Mass. Medical Center, retiring in
February 1981, with a commendation from the Deputy Administrator from the
Veterans Administration. She is survived by her husband, Richard D. Shuman,
Roanoke; and was the widow of L. E. "Jim" Blackmon, who died in 1977. Also
surviving are two sisters, Beulah W. Woodburn, Cincinnati, Ohio, Bonnie W.
Robinette, Moriarty, N.M.; a brother, Paul Webb, Rockford, Tenn.; two
daughters by her previous marriage, Peggy B. van der Swaagh, Killingworth,
Conn.; Diana B. Henrigues, Hoboken, N.J.; three stepdaughters, Carolyn
Osweiler, Tulsa, Okla., Kathleen Girlus, Suzanne Shuman, both of Davenport,
Iowa. A son, James Webb Blackmon, died in 1978. A memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the Fairview Methodist Church, 1310 Van
Buren St. N.W. Memorial gifts may be made to the church in her memory.
Interment will be in Bedford, Ore. Oakey's South Chapel is in charge of
arrangements.
