ANNUAL ANIMAL INDUSTRY DAY FRIDAY

The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech will hold its annual Animal Industry Day on Friday at the Animal Science Livestock Center on Plantation Road in Blacksburg.

The day features a series of educational programs on issues related to the beef, dairy, horse, poultry, sheep and swine industries.

Bobby Moser, dean of the College of Agriculture at Ohio State University, will give the keynote address at 11 a.m. His topic will be "Animal Agriculture in a Complex Environment."

Among the many educational programs scheduled for the afternoon, animal science Professor Ike Eller will talk about the results of a study of the state's beef industry that was conducted over the past 18 months and paid for by the Virginia Cattle Board.

Among the study's conclusions is that the beef industry contributes to the state's economy and environmental soundness.

Beef cattle represent the state's top farm commodity, generating $412 million in 1991, keeping 28,000 Virginian's employed.

Registration for the day's activities begin at 8:30 a.m. A traditional barbecue lunch will be held at noon for a $2 charge.
