OFFICIAL SAYS AUTOMAKER STILL CONSIDERING STATE

A state economic development official says Virginia still has a good chance of luring a Mercedes-Benz plant even though Gov. Douglas Wilder has not lobbied the automaker in person.

April L. Young, director of the state Department of Economic Development, defended the state's efforts in response to criticism from Hampton Mayor James L. Eason.

North and South Carolina sent their governors to lobby in person for the Mercedes-Benz plant, while Virginia sent officials from the economic development department, Eason said Tuesday. Eason said the state's four-person delegation left him discouraged about the prospects of the plant coming to southeastern Virginia. - Associated Press
