CHECKS BOUNCE, LAWYER CHARGED

A Roanoke County lawyer has been charged with writing more than $10,000 in bad checks.

George W. Harris III, 34, was arraigned in Roanoke General District Court on Wednesday on nine felony counts of uttering fraudulent checks.

He told a judge that he intends to pay the money back, according to Chief Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Betty Jo Anthony.

According to court records, Harris is accused of writing eight checks from his account with insufficient funds and cashing them at Roanoke banks from June 23 to June 25.

The checks ranged in amounts from $350 to $2,500 and totalled $10,350, according to court records.

An investigation was started by Dominion Bankshares Corp., where most of the checks were cashed. Authorities said investigations are under way in Roanoke County and Salem, although no additional charges have been brought.

Because Harris is the son of General District Court Judge George Harris, authorities said a special prosecutor may be appointed before additional action is taken in the investigations.

Harris, of the 6500 block of Greenway Drive, has been practicing law in Roanoke County for the past few years. He was allowed to remain free Wednesday on a $5,000 bond.
