KETRON ADVANCES IN GOLF TOURNEY

Ryan Ketron of Roanoke won a pair of matches Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the Bobby Bowers junior golf tournament in Springfield.

Ketron routed Nathan Lash of Chester 7 and 6 in the third round before dispatching Jason Quinter of Virginia Beach 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals.

Ketron, golfer of the year in Timesland and a rising senior at William Byrd High School, will meet Charlottesville's Rob Schneider in the semifinals this morning. Schneider played only one match Wednesday after his third-round opponent defaulted. The championship will be this afternoon.

In other sports in the region:

Salem's Tommy McDonald dropped only four sets on route to the men's championship of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit tournament in Blacksburg.

McDonald, who plays for East Carolina, defeated Tom Davidson of Bowdoin College 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals and then beat Virginia Tech's Jan Pablo Schurig 6-1, 6-1 for the championship.

Vinton's Antonette Veloso advanced to the semifinal round of the women's competition with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nicole Fiber of Mississippi State. The second-seeded Veloso, who plays for Rice, will face Wake Forest's Patty Murren today at 9 a.m.

In today's other women's semifinal, William and Mary's Raissa Remandaban, of Roanoke, faces top-seed Dana Evans of Wake Forest.

K.J. Hippensteel of Hunting Hills Country Club won his seventh straight match in the boys' 14-and-under zonal championships at Westside Tennis Club in Forest Hills, N.Y. He defeated Paco Fabian 6-3, 6-4, from New York, and then teamed with Donald Hodge of Oakton to defeat James Melhane and Dan Matro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The team competition - Hippensteel, 13, represents the Middle Atlantic Tennis Association - concludes today.

At Starkey Field, the Cave Spring American all-star team clinched the 13-year-old little league district title with a 5-2 victory over Clifton Forge.

Corey Paxton doubled in a run in the second inning and then broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth by driving in the winning runs.

Tom Bayrer was also 2-for-3 for Cave Spring, which advances to state competition beginning July 24 in Woodbridge.

Billy Arthur scattered four hits and struck out five to lead Roanoke Post 3 North to a 6-2 American Legion baseball victory over Tri-County. Donnie Meador went 2-for-3 and Kevin Saunders had a two-run double for Post 3 North (10-1).

Roanoker Roy Jordan opened his 766 series on Wednesday at Lee-Hi Lanes with a 300 game, his first in league play. Competing in the Good Friends league, Jordan, 27, added games of 199 and 267.
