COUNTY, NAACP OPPOSE SCHEDULED KLAN RALLY

Fliers advertising a Ku Klux Klan rally this weekend in King and Queen County invite "sincere white people" to attend, but county officials and the NAACP say the Klan isn't welcome.

The flier, illustrated with drawings of a Confederate flag and a hooded KKK member standing in front of a hangman's noose, promotes a "KKK Rally and cross lighting ceremony" at 6 p.m. Saturday. It appeared in mailboxes Sunday in Essex and King and Queen counties.

King and Queen County Sheriff Joseph L. Blanton said Tuesday he will try to contact the owner of the property where the rally is to be held and ask him to cancel it. The county attorney is also checking local ordinances to see if any could be used to control or prohibit the rally, the sheriff said.
