Scouts from about 18 major-league clubs are expected to attend, as will coaches from recent NCAA regional participants Oklahoma State and Notre Dame and from most state Division I and ACC schools. Beginning at 1 p.m., each of the four Games teams will hold a one-hour workout, which will include a showcase of personal skills by individual players. The workouts are open to the public free of charge.
The Commonwealth Games baseball competition is scheduled Saturday and Sunday at Cave Spring.
In other Games developments:
Racquetball will not be held because of low sign-ups, Virginia Amateur Sports executive director Pete Lampman said. The Senior Golf tournament, scheduled for Thursday, wasn't held because of a lack of competitors.
Soccer will have seven-player teams in 19-under boys' and women's open divisions playing Saturday and Sunday at River's Edge Sports Complex.
Baselines Tennis, a racket-service business in Roanoke, and Ashaway racket-stringing company will provide free stringing as a promotion during the Commonwealth Games of Virginia. The first 50 players who approach the gazebo at River's Edge Sports Complex beginning at 8 a.m. today will have their choice of four different strings. The giveaway is a $25 retail value.
The gazebo will be staffed from 8-5 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. Rackets will be strung on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, the finalists in each tennis event will receive a free set of strings.
