JUDGE BARS PRUDENTIAL FROM DROPPING CLIENTS

Saying the company had nothing to lose but money, a federal judge Thursday refused to let one of Florida's largest property insurers start dropping homeowners for fear of another hurricane this summer.

The judge ruled on a request from Prudential Property and Casualty Insurance Co. Legislators and insurance lobbyists see it as a signal that Florida's six-month moratorium blocking insurers from canceling homeowners' policies will stay in force until Nov. 14.

"We see some of our fair-weather friends who want to pull out of Florida," Gov. Lawton Chiles told a commission seeking solutions to the insurance crisis at its first meeting Thursday. "We have temporarily stopped them in their tracks." - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
