DEMO DERBY, TRACTOR PULL ARE NRV FAIR WARM-UPS

A demolition derby and antique tractor pull are both set for July 31 at the New River Valley Fairgrounds as warm-ups for the annual New River Valley Fair.

Drivers still have time to enter the demolition derby and compete for $1,000 in prizes, said T.C. "Bud" Walsh, fair manager. But the event is limited to 35 cars, he said, and entries will be taken on a first-come first-served basis.

Entry forms and rules are available at Advance Auto Parts and NAPA Auto Parts stores in Dublin and Pulaski; Agee's, Auto World and Harmon's Chevron in Christiansburg, and Fred's Auto Parts, Reed's Auto Parts and Baldwin Auto Parts in Radford.

There is a $10 entry fee. Entries must be mailed to Henry Farris, P.O. Box 507, Newbern, Va. 24126. The event is sponsored by Nationwide Demolition Derby.

The antique tractor pull is limited to tractors made before 1960. Further information is available from Andy Cullip of New River Valley Antique Tractor and Engine Association (telephone 674-4044).

The fair itself has one of the largest livestock shows in the state, Walsh said. This year, livestock will be shown every day of the week-long fair during the first week of August.

Walsh said $18,000 in prize money will be awarded in competitions ranging from livestock, flowers and crops to arts, crafts and home-making goods.

Performers during the week will include Tracy Lawrence on Aug. 2, the Six Shooters Aug. 3, the Pirates of the Mississippi Aug. 4, a horse pull Aug. 5, Allison Krauss Aug. 6 and John Conlee Aug. 7.

Other entertainment will include a display of old farm machinery, family animal farm exhibit, and the Royal Palace Circus.

Admission is $5 for adults ($4 on Aug. 5) and $2 for children ages 6-11. Parking and grandstand are free.
