YOSEMITE RANGER SHOT; CAMPERS EVACUATED

Nearly 1,200 campers were evacuated from Yosemite National Park as police conducted an intense manhunt for a gunman who wounded a park ranger before fleeing into the wilderness.

Yosemite officials, worried that campers might inadvertently cross the gunman's path, closed five square miles of the park to all but police and park vehicles.

It was the first time since rangers began patrolling the park in 1914 that a ranger has been shot.
