OBIT-WORTHY, HOWARD G. JR.
WORTHY, Howard G. Jr., 70, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 15, 1993, in
South Roanoke Nursing Home. Mr. Worthy was a native of Georgetown, Georgia,
born September 25, 1922, to the late Howard G. and Beatrice A. Worthy Sr. He
moved to Roanoke in 1952, when he began work with the newly-formed Carter
Machinery Company as Secretary-Treasurer. Retiring from Carter in 1980 as
Executive Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer, he lead an active retirement
serving as Office Manager of the Hazelgrove, Dickenson, Rea, Smeltzer & Brown
law firm, a volunteer for SCORE, and as President of McIlhanny Equipment
Company. Mr. Worthy was a captain in the Air Force, a member of the Cave
Spring Masonic Lodge, a past president of the Optimist Club, a Shriner, a
deacon and former Sunday School teacher of the First Baptist Church. He is
survived by his wife, Katherine H. Worthy; two sons and daughters-in-law,
Howard G. and Michele Worthy III, and Clark H. and Smith (Sandra) S. Worthy;
two grandchildren, Conrad F. Worthy and C. Hatcher Worthy Jr.; a sister, Joyce
Anderson; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Oakey's
South Chapel 12 noon Saturday with Dr. Charles G. Fuller officiating.
Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Amyloid Treatment and Research Center, Boston University
School of Medicine, Arthritis Center, 71 E. Concord St., K-5, Boston, MA.
