THE TIPOFF

STRIKE OUT THE BAND:o Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs and the Boxtops will perform in concert Saturday night at Salem Municipal Field following the Buccaneers' game against the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Spirits.

Gates will open at 4:30. The game will start at 5 and the music will start shortly after the game. Reserved and general admission seats will be $5 and $4.

Maurice Williams is famous for originating some of the most memorable songs of the '50s and '60s, notably ``Little Darlin','' ``May I'' and ``Stay.'' The Boxtops had unforgettable records, too, especially ``Cry Like a Baby'' and ``The Letter'' in the late '60s. Lenny Longo is their lead singer.

WING IT: The Alleghany Highlands air show will be Saturday and Sunday at Ingalls Field in Hot Springs. It will feature the Confederate Air Force and Warbirds, experimental and remote-control aircraft, hot air balloons and special guest, the astronaut John McBride, commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Plus wing-walkers, sky-divers, hang-gliders and comedian Charlie Kulp.

Admission is $5 each day. Children under 12 get in free. For information, call 839-7596.

UNPLUGGED: Goose Creek Symphony, known for their ``progressive country acid folk surf rock,'' will play acoustic music Sunday night at 8 at Lime Kiln Arts in Lexington. Tickets are $10. The band is scaled down for this tour, consisting of Vince Micko, Paul Spradlin and Charlie Gearhart. Call 463-3074.

By the way, Goose Creek also will play on Saturday at the Wise County Fairgrounds to raise money for WMMT, the non-commercial public radio station of Appalshop, a non-profit media arts center in Whitesburg, Ky. Also appearing: the Metro Blues All Stars, Kiya Heartwood and Open Range, Band Branch and the Possum Hollers. Tickets are $16 in advance, $20 at the gate. Call (606) 633-0108.

SING FOR JOY: Natural Bridge of Virginia will present a Christian music festival called ``Joyfest'' on Saturday from noon to 4:30 in the afternoon. Tickets come three ways: $13 for the concert plus admission to the Natural Bridge, the wax museum and the caverns; $10.50 for the concert plus two attractions, and $7 for the concert and one of the three other attractions.

The show will feature Two Hearts from Nashville, Holywind and Promise, a group from First Baptist Church in Roanoke. Call (800) 533-1410.

BUY NOW: The Barter Theatre in Abingdon is presenting a lavish musical comedy for the first time in years. It's ``A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,'' and it will continue through Aug. 15. It has a cast of 21, colorful costumes and a three-piece orchestra.

GO SOUTH: The Hungry Mother Arts and Crafts Festival will be today through Sunday at Hungry Mother State Park in Marion. It's informal and outdoors, with traditional and contemporary crafts, bluegrass music, art and music workshops for children and other entertainment.

HERE COMES THE SUN: The Hottest Fun Under the Sun festival returns to Wytheville on Saturday with beach music from the Collegians, the Breeze, the Entertainers and the Kays in Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park.

No glass containers will be allowed. Tickets are $10. Proceedswill go to the Wythe Arts Council and its annual Chatauqua Festival. The beach festival will run from 4 to midnight.

GET TOGETHER: The Monacan Indians will present a powwow, rain or shine, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sedalia Center near Big Island.

Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children. Kids under 5 get in free.
