MORE SIGNATURES SOUGHT FOR BOARD-VOTE PETITION

Organizers of a petition drive to get an elected-school-board referendum on Montgomery County's November ballot are seeking more signatures.

Petitions they turned in earlier this month were about 200 short of a sufficient number of registered voters.

County Registrar Sandra Chapin said the petitions turned in so far contain the names of 2,740 registered county voters. The names of 2,929 registered voters - 10 percent of the registered voters in the county as of Jan. 1 - are needed before Aug. 4 to get the issue on the fall ballot

Supporters of an elected school board turned in petitions on July 1 containing 3,007 names, but some those people were not registered voters.

Chapin said organizers of the petition drive indicated they will bring in more signatures for verification next week.
