AREA DECATHLETE, HEPTATHLETE GET NATIONAL BIDS

Meredith Bowden, a rising senior at Patrick Henry, placed third in the heptathlon competition at the USATF Eastern Regional Junior Olympic Championships, which concluded Friday in Hampton.

Competing for the Roanoke Valley Amateur Track and Field Club, Bowden compiled 3,205 points. Tai Bingham of Richmond was the winner with 3,970 points, followed by Karen Ali of Atlanta with 3,495.

In the decathlon competition, Toby Fifer, a 1993 graduate of Jefferson Forest, placed second with 5,898 points. The winner, Evan Wix of Georgia, compiled 6,553 points.

Fifer and Bowden advance to the national championships in Baton Rouge, La., starting July 27.
