GET A BIKE . . . AND GET A LIFE

SO, JACKIE Wimmer (July 9 letter to the editor, "Don't peddle more pedalers on Roanoke"), you think those who choose to ride a bicycle should "grow up" and become adults.

What do you do in your spare time? Are you one who sits around in front of the television with a bag of cheese doodles and a can of beer, watching other people live their lives? Do you watch men fight over a dead pig? Do you like to watch the "excitement" of running around a square when a ball gets hit? Or is it watching men with the orange ball and basket? Or maybe "pro" wrestling? Imagine, grown men, playing childish games.

It is absurd that people like you watch these games, claim these millionaires as heroes, and then have the audacity to criticize those who want a little more meaning out of life.

As cyclists, we may look "silly" and "childish," but not as silly as some bloated, couch-potato with a remote control and no life.

And, Mr. and Mrs. Local Government, cycling is growing faster than ever before. Now is the time to get a handle on the benefits for the area that this sport can bring. Don't let this aspect of tourism pass us as did the Tour Du Pont. STEVE CURTISS ROANOKE
