CAVS LOSE BIG MAN TO DEACONS

Ricardo Peral, described as the best big man in Europe under 20, dealt Virginia its latest recruiting setback when he made an oral commitment to play basketball for Wake Forest.

Virginia finished second on six players this year - five of them 6-8 or taller, including Peral, a 6-10 forward from Guadalajara, Spain.

Recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons had predicted that Peral would sign with Virginia before he crossed the ocean for recruiting visits to UVa, Nebraska and Wake.

Peral has met NCAA academic guidelines; however, he received money from his club team in Spain and it is likely the ACC will review his amateur status. He joins a Wake Forest recruiting class that includes 6-10 Tim Duncan from the Virgin Islands and 6-10 Makhtar Ndiaye from Senegal.

In other regional sports:

Brian Clark of Roanoke reached the finals of the men's singles competition at the USTA/Mid-Atlantic sectional 40-over tennis tournament in Richmond.

Clark lost in the final to Roy Beskin of Virginia Beach, 6-3, 7-5. Both are former Virginia Tech players. Clark reached the final by beating Rob Henderson of Virginia Beach 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.

In the doubles final, Roy Beskin and Herb Beskin defeated Frances Kreysa and Mark Greier of Blacksburg 6-3, 6-4.

Wayne Erskine of Staunton captured high overall gun and two other championships Sunday in the Homestead Open skeet shoot in Hot Springs.

Erskine's 391x400 score defeated a field of 100 shooters for the high overall classification. He scored 98x100 to capture the 410-gauge event and a 99x100 for the 28-gauge title.

Gary Gorrell of Charleston, W.Va., posted a perfect 100x100 to take the 20-gauge title. Erskine's son, Ben, took the junior division with a round of 91x100.

Steve Rollyson of Charleston, W.Va., defeated Gorrell in a shootoff for the 12-gauge title after both tied at 100x100 in regulation.

Nellie Whitehurst of Springfield took the women's championship with a 381x400 score and John Eklund of Lorton was the senior winner with a 383x400 total.
