APPLE HARVEST IS EXPECTED TO GROW IN `93

Virginia apple growers are expected to harvest 380 million pounds of apples in 1993. The estimated harvest, based on a July 1 survey of producers, would be 3 percent above last year's 370 million pounds. It would, however, be 10 percent less than 1991.

Growers experienced a normal winter and spring with no late frost or freeze. Excellent topsoil moisture and sufficient rains throughout the growing season have created ideal growing conditions, according to the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service.

Also, the state's peach crop is estimated at 27 million pounds, an 8 percent increase over last year's 25-million-pound crop. - Staff Report
