BOLLING GUNS FOR 3 IN ROW IN RVWGA

Salem's Dot Bolling will attempt to become only the second player ever to win the Roanoke Valley Women's Golf Association City-County title three consecutive times when the 54-hole tournament starts today at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Former Roanoker Liz Waynick is the only player to ever score the RVWGA triple, winning the tournament in 1980, '81 and '82. Three players - Penny Stallins (83-84), Joan Gardner (86-87) and Marilyn Bussey (89-90) - have two straight since, but each faltered in her bid for three in a row.

Bolling, who also won the title in 1988, will be playing the first round on her home course. The tournament shifts to Blue Hills on Wednesday and concludes Thursday at Botetourt Country Club.

The 66-player field includes Stallins, Bussey, 1985 winner Sara Cole, three-time champion Audrey Najjum and perennial contenders such as 1993 Hall of Fame runner-up Nancy Shuck and former Hall of Fame champions Mar-C Milona and Kathy Dodd.

Lee Shirley, the 17-year-old Salem teen-ager who won the Hall of Fame title last month, is not entered because of a prior tournament commitment.
