FIRST, SAVE OUR CORNER OF THE WORLD

EVERYONE can claim to be an environmentalist, calling to save the whales, pandas or any of an assortment of large, highly visible, "lovable" species.

However, Karen Terwilliger (July 11 commentary, "Virginia has its own endangered species") has laid the onus of responsibility squarely where it belongs: in our own back yards.

We face a daunting uphill battle to save our beleaguered world. She has at least shown us where to begin. The rest is up to us. KERMIT W. SALYER JR. ROANOKE
