BASKETBALL-HAWKS ADVANCE DESPITE LOSS

Curtis Staples scored 30 points Tuesday as the Roanoke Hawks lost to Team Detroit 92-88 in the boys' 17-and-under national championships at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.

It was the second loss in three games for the Hawks, who, nonetheless, were one of two teams from their pool to advance based on a tie-breaker system. Roanoke earlier had lost to Fayco (W.Va.) Speed 74-72 when point guard Derrick Hines was sidelined by back pain, then Roanoke beat the Ozark (Mo.) Saints 82-79 after Hines' return.

Staples has 62 points in three games for the Hawks, who begin double-elimination play this morning at 9.
