BOLLING TOPS THE FIELD IN WOMEN'S GOLF EVENT

While Dot Bolling was taking her customary position atop the leader board, Nancy Shuck supplied the excitement, not to mention the refreshments, in Tuesday's first round of the Roanoke Valley Women's Golf Association's City-County Tournament at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Shuck, who claims she has been "playing golf for 100 years," had a day she never will forget, scoring her first career hole in one en route to a 6-over-par 78 that left her one shot behind Bolling.

After running a 4-wood into the cup at the 147-yard 15th hole, Shuck stuck to golf tradition after the round, inviting the entire 66-player field to join her for an afternoon toddy. On her, of course.

"It's not costing me anything," she told her guests. "It's costing Haven [her husband]."

With the exception of Bolling, the rest of the field needed a double - as in drink, not bogey - to try and forget the punishment dealt by Hidden Valley's tricky layout. Besides the leaders, the only other player to break 84 was two-time champion Penny Stallins, who had an 82.

"You mean only two people broke 80?" Bolling asked. "I'm not real surprised, though. They never do here. This place always eats 'em up."

Notable victims included 1985 champion Sara Cole (86), three-time winner Audrey Najjum (86), two-time champion Marilyn Bussey (88) and '92 Hall of Fame winner Mar-C Milona (90).

Bolling, though, was right at home on Hidden Valley's hilly fairways and undulating greens. After bogeying four of the first six holes, the leader played the final 12 holes in 1-over. Heading into today's second round at Blue Hills, Bolling remains the odds-on favorite to become only the second player ever to win three straight RVWGA titles.

"I'm not feeling any pressure concerning the three-in-a-row thing," she said. "I'm always relaxed in this tournament, probably because I've won it three times. It's just the opposite in the Hall of Fame. If I ever win that, I think I'll be relaxed there, too."

Shuck, whose hole in one enabled her to pick up three shots on Bolling, who bogeyed the 15th, has been a runner-up twice in the two local women's majors - the City-County and Hall of Fame - but never a winner.

"It's far too early to think about winning," she said. "I'm still on a high from the hole in one. I never thought it would happen for me."

\ SAND BLASTS: Hidden Valley stockpiled huge leads in the Fran McCorkindale and Evelyn Anderton team competitions. Hidden Valley leads Roanoke Country Club by 14 in the McCorkindale (17-and-under handicap) and Botetourt Country Club by 18 in the Anderton (18-and-over handicap). . . . Milona's 90 came on the heels of her best round ever - a 1-under 71 in the final round of the Lynwood Invitational. . . . Liz Waynick is the only player ever to win three consecutive City-County titles - 1980-1982. . . . The final round of the tournament will be played Wednesday at Botetourt Country Club.
