Charleys Restaurant closes abruptly

Charleys Restaurant in Grand Pavilion mall on Virginia 419 has closed. Lunch customers on Tuesday found a "closed" sign on the door, said a worker in another mall store.

An employee who answered the phone confirmed the eatery had closed Monday. Owner Lee Miller could not be reached for comment. - Staff report

\ Gasoline prices down in past month

The nationwide average price of self-serve regular unleaded gasoline has dropped 1.2 cents since June 22 to $1.111 per gallon, the American Automobile Association said Tuesday.

The motor club's monthly survey shows the national average price has fallen 2.1 cents since the start of summer, when it was $1.132 per gallon.

Self-serve mid-grade unleaded fell 1 cent to $1.208 per gallon. Self-serve premium dropped 0.9 cent to $1.294. Full-serve regular unleaded fell 1 cent to $1.356 per gallon; mid-grade fell 0.5 cent to $1.453 and premium declined 0.7 cent to $1.515. - Staff report

\ Salem bleach maker buys vacant building

Sewell Products Inc., a Salem manufacturer of bleach, ammonia and fabric softener, has bought a nearby building that will double its space in the Mill Lane area.

Steve Sewell said the additional property, the former Tom's Foods Inc. building, had been vacant since 1988. It will be used mainly for warehouse and new product development, but he plans to remodel about 15,000 square feet for lease to other companies.

Sewell Products makes private-label bleach and also has its own label, Blue Ridge. It distributes to Food Lion, Kroger and Harris Teeter, Sewell said. The company has about 35 employees. - Staff report

\ Hills Department Stores, a Canton, Mass.-based discount chain, said Tuesday the U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved its disclosure statement and set a Sept. 2 deadline for claimants to vote on its plan for financial reorganization. A confirmation hearing on the plan is set for Sept. 10.

\ Roanoke Electric Steel Corp. on Tuesday declared a quarterly cash dividend of 12 cents per share of common stock, payable Aug. 25 to shareholders Aug. 6.

\ Two Roanoke business leaders, Ben Jenkins, president and chief operating officer of First Union National Bank of Virginia, and George Cartledge Jr., president of Grand Piano & Furniture Co., have been named to the Corporate Advisory Council for the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Authority. Their appointments were announced Tuesday by state Sen. Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo, R-Fincastle.
